Learning About and Plant a Pollinator Garden
May 7 or 13

Pollinators are crucial to our environment.  They travel from plant to plant spreading genetic material that is necessary for most flowering plants to reproduce.  These same plants that pollinators visit are responsible for providing us with fruits, vegetables, and nuts and they also help to prevent soil erosion and so much more. Between 75% and 90% of all flowering plants on earth need help with pollination.  Birds, bats, bees, butterflies, beetles, and other small mammals are pollinators, and they are threatened by a loss in their feeding and nesting habitats.

Kyra Etter from Franklinton, NC  is working on her Gold Award Project for Girl Scouts and has put together a program for children to learn about pollinators while becoming a part of the solution to saving these important insects.  Your 5 to 12 year olds are invited to attend a two-hour event at Two Dachshund Farm.  They will learn about pollinators and their environment through fun games and activities.  Then they will help create a new pollinator garden by planting some pollinator friendly plants.  They will leave with a special patch recognizing their role in helping pollinators.  They will also get their own seed packets and the knowledge to start a pollinator garden in their own backyard.  Cost is $12 per child but donations for this Girl Scout project will also be greatly appreciated.

Two Dachshund Farm is a Fiber and Lavender Farm in Franklinton, NC with fiber animals such as llamas, Angora goats, sheep, and alpacas.  Tours lasting approximately 45 minutes to meet the animals and learn about fiber farming will also be available before the Pollinator Events at $6 per person for anyone 3 years of age and older.

There are a few picnic tables available first come/first serve or you can bring your own blanket &  chairs  if you’d like to bring lunch.
